Charles Darwin foresaw where we are today back in 1859, when he wrote on page 387 of his seminal work, On The Origin of Species, In the distant future I see open fields for far more important researches. Psychology will be based on a new foundation, that of the necessary acquirements of each mental power and capacity by gradation.

Evolutionary psychology is quickly becoming the future focus of clinical psychology because of its sound empirical base and its effectiveness with a wide range of human mental health challenges.

In these modules, we will explore what evolutionary psychology is and how it can contribute to practical and efficient therapeutic interventions with a wide range of psycho-somatic behaviours.  We will address the two most common mental health challenges of depressing and managing anxiety.  In exploring these topics, we will address the roles played by past loss and trauma and current outdated perceptions and illusions in mental health.

We will consider some current proponents of this approach and discuss specific case studies where an evolutionary psychological approach can be applied.  As well, we will demonstrate specific intervention tools that can be used with clients. Participants will leave with a list of specific ideas, tools and techniques  to consider implementing with their clients.

Module 1

Module 1 – Keys to Using Evolutionary Psychology in Therapy

In this first module, we will trace the roots of evolutionary psychology. We will examine the key ideas on which evolutionary psychology is based. This will include its links to the hard sciences such as biology, physics, chemistry, and neurology, among others. There will be a consideration of some of the key past and present proponents of an evolutionary approach to mental health.

We will address such topics as: perception, balance, transformation, subjectivity, fantasies and nightmares. We will begin our exploration of the two most common challenges in mental health today, depression and anxiety. The role of personal values, creativity and the seven different forms of stress will also be addressed.

We will also consider the personal and professional value to the therapist of using evolutionary psychology.  We will finish this, and each module, with a list of “Take Aways” and a “Module Summary” to anchor the key points for the participant.

Learning Objectives:

The therapist will be able to:

  1. Explain evolutionary psychology’s role in mental health.
  2. Describe evolutionary psychology’s contribution to clinical psychology.
  3. List evolutionary psychology’s contributions to effective therapy.
  4. Understand the use of evolutionary psychology with depressing clients.
  5. Explain how to use evolutionary psychology with anxious clients.
  6. Adapt the principles of evolutionary psychology to each.
  7. Identify ways evolutionary psychology can be used in their own practice.

Module 2

Module 2 – Keys to Using Evolutionary Psychology to Empower

Every child is born with a will to live, a belief they can be anything, do anything and have anything.  While, research suggests this is true biologically it is less so in practice due to limiting beliefs.  So, for most clients with mental health issues, the fundamental challenge are perceptions of hopelessness, uselessness or helplessness.

Their perception of dis-empowerment leaves them crippled to act in their own best interests.  Often then, client empowerment is the therapist’s underlying agenda. This is where evolutionary psychology can be a very effective approach because of its sound biological basis.

In this module, we will explore how to assist clients to empower themselves in each of the seven areas of their life: spiritually, mentally, vocationally, financially, socially, famially and physically. We will address the key laws on empowerment and how to support and challenge clients to rediscover them and use them, in their daily life.

We will discuss specific case studies where disempowerment is the key challenge and how to approach it quickly and effectively. We will demonstrate specific and effective intervention ideas and tools with various situations including: children, teens, adults, seniors and couples. Participants will leave with a collection of ideas, tools, techniques to put into immediate use.

Learning Objectives:

The therapist will be able to:

  1. Explain how to use evolutionary psychology to empower clients.
  2. Describe evolutionary psychology’s role in the seven areas of a client’s life.
  3. List the key principles in evolutionary psychology to empower clients.
  4. Employ techniques enabling clients to empower themselves.
  5. Use effective intervention tools for unique client situations.
  6. Adapt empowerment tools for work with children, youth and elders.
  7. Adjust empowerment tools for couples.

Module 3

Module 3 – Keys to Using Evolutionary Psychology for Grief or Trauma

A significant loss, in any one of the seven areas of one’s life, can be considered a trauma or reason for grief.  Client losses come in a variety forms including, their beliefs, memory, self-esteem, employment, finances, friends, family and health. Many of us have had clients who carry unresolved and protracted loss and grief. Clients carry it for weeks, months and even years.  Such a distraction colours the client’s life in many ways leaving them rotating in circles of confusion instead of evolving forward in their life. Evolutionary psychology offers practical ideas and tools for respecting and accelerating grief and loss.

In this module, we will explore how to assist clients to move through their grief in a manner that honours their loss and points their way forward.  The participant will learn how to incorporate laws of physics to accelerate the client’s grief process which enables them to get on with their life.

We will discuss specific cases of loss and grief and how to approach it quickly and effectively. We will demonstrate specific intervention ideas and a tool which can be used in various situations with a variety individuals and groups including: children, teens, adults, seniors, couples and families. Participants will leave with a new set of ideas and a new tool for their traumatized or grieving clients.

Learning Objectives:

The therapist will be able to:

  1. Explain trauma and loss in evolutionary psychology.
  2. Describe the seven forms of trauma and loss.
  3. Explain the role of transformation in grief.
  4. Uncover new forms of transformation.
  5. Facilitate a client through the grieving process.
  6. Identify the signs of grief resolution.
  7. Adapt the grief process to the client’s specific needs.

In this module, we will explore how to assist clients to move through their shock, confusion and fear in a manner that enables them to manage this uncontrollable and unprecedented situation.  The participant will learn how to incorporate some laws of biology, physics and chemistry to accelerate the client’s learning which enables them to manage the stress and get on with their life.

We will discuss the connection between the clients values and their fears, between their thinking and their feelings and between their self-control and their personal power.
