Race-based stress and trauma is a global phenomenon, perpetuated by white supremacist systems. Being that the field of psychology was conceived within a system of global white supremacy, how can we consciously help our clients struggling with racial trauma? In this groundbreaking 4-part treatment series, Dr. Broderick Sawyer suggests an integrative, empowering approach to treating race-based stress and trauma in the context of Western psychotherapy.

Beginning with mindfulness in the first module, Dr. Sawyer explores empowerment as a function of self-awareness and value-based exploration. In the second module, he then outlines the value of self-compassion in the context of ongoing racial oppression. In the third module, he discusses the importance of monitoring therapist countertransference when treating racial trauma, as a means of not perpetuating white supremacist values. Lastly, he reviews a case example of a past client, outlining what effective treatment for racial trauma looks like from intake to discharge.

Module 1

Module 1: Behavioral Mindfulness for Racial Trauma

In this module, Dr. Sawyer outlines and defines behavioral mindfulness as a means of treatment and case conceptualization. In addition, Dr. Sawyer outlines specific techniques to teach behavioral mindfulness via skill building, and in-session behavioral reinforcement.

Participants will learn:

  • How to use behavioral mindfulness to treat racial trauma.
  • The importance of creating experiential boundaries for non-white victims of racial trauma early in treatment.
  • Culturally-specific augmentations to place mindfulness within the context of combating white supremacy on an ongoing basis.

Module 2

Module 2: Self-Compassion for Racial Trauma

In this module, Dr. Sawyer outlines and defines self-compassion in the context of racial trauma. In addition, he explains how therapists can teach self-compassion via skill building, and in-session behavioral reinforcement.

Participants will learn:

  • How self-compassion addresses internalized racism.
  • Culturally-specific augmentations for using self-compassion in the context of racial trauma.
  • In and out of session techniques to increase self-compassion in clients.

Module 3

Module 3: Cultural Projection and Treating Racial Trauma

In this module, Dr. Sawyer outlines and defines the nature of “cultural projection”. In addition, he explains how therapists can decrease the likelihood of projecting white supremacist values onto their clients by engaging in self-observation and self-care.

Participants will learn:

  • The breadth of cultural experiences which may or may not be projected onto clients suffering from racial trauma.
  • The importance of therapist self-care in reducing the likelihood of projecting white supremacist values onto clients.
  • Specific techniques to increase emotional endurance and resilience in therapists, with the aim of decreasing cultural projection.

Module 4

Participants will learn:

  • What an integrated treatment approach to racial trauma looks like, from intake to discharge.
  • How to encourage the sublimation or re-purposing of strong, ongoing affective experiences caused by racism.
