This six-hour training is designed for professionals working in the realm of couples therapy. Self-expansion and the process of discovering and cultivating an individual’s unique sense of self can be a difficult balance to strike when working with couples. How much attention should be paid to each individual’s self-interest, experiences, family of origin influences, and etc. all the while trying to cultivate connection and intimacy with partners is a delicate dance. This training will help you identify areas and places to lead couples as they begin to gain greater clarity, connection and identification of their own sense of self while strengthening their relationship at the same time.

TRAINING information

This six-hour training is designed for professionals working in the realm of couples therapy. Self-expansion and the process of discovering and cultivating an individual’s unique sense of self can be a difficult balance to strike when working with couples. How much attention should be paid to each individual’s self-interest, experiences, family of origin influences, and etc. all the while trying to cultivate connection and intimacy with partners is a delicate dance. This training will help you identify areas and places to lead couples as they begin to gain greater clarity, connection and identification of their own sense of self while strengthening their relationship at the same time.

Learning Objectives

1. Understand the importance of self-expansion and autonomy within the context of a romantic relationship.

Gracefully, delicately and warmly invite couples to re-envision their partners as individual, independent human beings that entered the relationship as such, as opposed to simply “their wife” or “their husband.”

2. Help partners identify personal narratives around their sense of self along with the narratives they hold of their partner.

Help couples engage their curiosity around their own personal limitations as well as the stories they’ve created about their significant others. Discover the ways in which individuals struggle with shame, perfectionism, and not enough-ness and how these play a role in their relationship with and to one another.

3. Facilitate the cultivation of emotional sharing and vulnerability within the couple.

As incredible moments of clarity and “golden nugget” moments arise in couples therapy, these become the foundation from which to practice vulnerability. Learn how to help couples identify these moments of vulnerability in their relationship with themselves and one another. Begin to help couples understand what to do with this level of emotional disclosure and how to hold space for this kind of closeness in their relationship.

4. Guide couples in supporting one another’s individual goals of self-expansion within their relationships.

Help the couple understand and hold space for their partner’s sense of self and autonomy within the relationship in order to promote growth and expansion.

5. Identify and use creative practices to help couples build new, co-created, shared meaning with one another.

Utilize the knowledge of one another’s autonomy, personality and even attachment style to co-create new, shared meaning, new stories and even new dreams and goals with one another.
