This presentation will address the main developmental issues common to 18-29 year-olds, including identity explorations, instability, self-development, feeling in-between adolescence and adulthood, and sense of possibilities. The focus will be on normal development, but implications for mental health will also be discussed.

The goal is to inform participants about normal development from ages 18 to 29, including how what is “normal” has changed over the past half century, as education has become broader and longer and as ages of entering marriage and parenthood have come later. Historical developments over the past 70 years leading to the rise of the new life stage of emerging adulthood will be outlined.

Mental health challenges will also be discussed, including depression, anxiety, and substance abuse, in the context of normative developmental challenges such as identity explorations. This will also include a discussion of resilience in emerging adulthood and how to promote it.

Recorded on 22nd August 2022
