One of the most common comorbid disorders in those with mental health issues is insomnia. Whereas many confuse insomnia disorder for insomnia as a symptom of the co-occurring problem, insomnia disorder is more commonly meritorious of its own treatment attention and effective insomnia treatment improves the co-occurring condition too.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) is a brief, highly effective treatment for those with co-occurring mental health conditions. CBT-I is straightforward but it is important to effectively troubleshoot common implementation issues such as finding ways to get out of bed when unmotivated or in pain, limiting time-in-bed in those who use the bed for retreat, and implementing stimulus control in those with trauma and high anxiety. This workshop will use didactic learning, demonstration, breakout room practice and sleep diary exercises to provide a comprehensive coverage of CBT-I for comorbid insomnia. At the conclusion of the webinar, participants will be able to:
- Conduct screening assessments for insomnia disorder.
- List the three causes of chronic insomnia in comorbid insomnias.
- Match the main components of CBT-I to the three causes of insomnia.
- Deliver the treatment rationale interactively with clients.
- Devise a new sleeping schedule with clients collaboratively, and assess the results.
- Troubleshoot issues relating to co-occurring conditions such as depression

<strong>Colleen E. Carney, PhD, </strong>is an Associate Professor in the Psychology Department at Ryerson University and the Director of the Sleep and Depression Laboratory. She is one of leading experts in the treatment of insomnia, particularly in the context of co-occurring illness. She has over 100 publications on the topic of insomnia, including the only Cognitive Behavioural Therapy workbook written expressly for comorbid insomnias. Dr. Carney is a passionate advocate for improving access to effective treatment.
