We all know the first thing most couples say when they start therapy, “We need to work on our communication.” Relational Accountability (RA) is a Narrative-based approach that provides a framework for helping couples identify the messages they are sending to each other, both overtly and covertly, intentionally, and unintentionally. Using RA, couples increase their understanding of how they affect their partner’s story of self, step out of their unhelpful cycles, and learn new ways to express themselves to each other without getting lost in translation. Relational Accountability supports a radical shift from individualistic to communal values and ethics.

Relational Accountability is informed by Narrative Theory. While an understanding of Narrative will help you to understand RA, it is not a prerequisite for attending this workshop. In addition to providing strategies for you to use in your therapy sessions, RA can also be used in your own relationships with partners, children, friends, etc.

The training first explores the theory, including its origins in narrative and connections with other theories and models. Participants will learn about the importance of stories, explore their own stories, and how we have the power to shape others’ stories. We then shift to using RA in session with clients, including specific steps and tools. Finally, we explore the systemic, societal, macrosystem application of shifting from individualistic to communal values, especially in a world so full of fear and disconnection.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this training, participants will:

  • Understand the underlying theoretical tenets of Relational Accountability
  • Begin to explore the influence they have on others’ experience of themselves
  • Start to identify their own stories of themselves and relationships
  • Know how to lead a RA session with clients
  • Have an increased understanding of how power structures affect relationships
  • Understand how interactions between individuals relate to cultural power structures
