As therapists, we devote ourselves to learning the latest, cutting edge theory and psychological constructs in order to help our clients cognitively process their life experience and trauma. Often times, in our efforts to master our knowledge of these cognitive theories, we may lose sight of another invaluable tool we have present in our sessions, our own bodies.
The theory of co-regulation can be explained as the way in which one person’s autonomic nervous system interacts with another person’s autonomic nervous system so as to facilitates greater emotional balance and physical health. As therapists, awareness of and attention to our own nervous system is essential in helping our clients achieve their own experience of nervous system regulation. This then sets the stage for our clients to better comprehend and retain any cognitive interventions we employ in session.
Bringing the science of co-regulation into the therapy room, in both implicit and explicit ways, is something any provider, with any methodology or training can do to amplify the effect of their work. When we pay attention to our own nervous systems (bodies), we not only model invaluable self care for our clients, but we create an environment that quite literally has a healing effect in and of itself.
