Trauma affects the human experience: mind, body and spirit. We now know that trauma also includes micro traumas, macro traumas as well as secondary or vicarious traumatic experiences. Trauma is in the eyes of the beholder; thus trauma isn’t selective. With PTS (Post Traumatic Stress), PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), C/PTSD (Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) and even intergenerational trauma, traditionally can commonly occur in people who have experienced or witnessed a traumatic event. However, not all who have experienced trauma develop a diagnosable disorder. This in conjunction with military and combat-related trauma(s) (even across generations) makes the therapy process and growth even more complex as it often includes moral injury as a result of traumatic experiences. Often this leads to moral injury, disconnectedness some time ultimately leading to suicidal ideation. Trauma-informed care includes helping those who have been exposed to horrific, terrifying and catastrophic events as well as those who have experienced micro traumas as well.

Trauma is any negative life event in which the brain perceives a real sense of danger and helplessness. Acute or Complex trauma may influence long-term mental health consequences. Many people will go years without realizing they have experienced trauma, often reporting they are ashamed to admit their feelings in fear of being seen as weak. In addition, military and combat related trauma also affects families and people’s support systems alike. Read More

Learning Objectives

Learners will:

  1. Discuss the different types of trauma, Post Traumatic Stress (PTS), Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (C/PTSD), Vicarious (Secondary Trauma) and Micro versus Macro Traumas.
  2. Understand the special circumstances of military and combat related traumas and how they impact those experiencing this type of trauma.
  3. Understand moral injury and the impact of this on suicidal ideation in military and veteran populations; and, military families and support systems.
  4. Discuss and develop trauma-informed practices, skills and tools to help those who’ve experienced trauma: including unique populations such as military personnel, veterans, first responders/front line workers, and medical personnel.
  5. Understand how trauma develops and impacts the mind-body-spirit connection.
  6. Understand how to move forward using Post Traumatic Growth (PTG) techniques.
  7. Comprehend and Implement the “GROWTH FORMULA” to help move trauma into post traumatic growth (PTG)

Growth Formula:

i. Identify triggers, events, feelings, sensations, stressors and beliefs – identifying what’s realistic as well as accurate perceptions of oneself and experiences; versus, inaccurate perceptions based out of reality.

ii. Challenge triggers, events, feelings, sensations, stressors and beliefs – using skills such as thought-stopping, mindfulness, journaling and processing brings us one step closer to resolving our traumas.

iii. Respond & Replace (Reframe) triggers, events, stressors and beliefs – using the discoveries we make by challenging our experiences, we can begin to replace and reframe how we think, feel and behave by implementing the skills we’ve learned in the process of challenging.
