People get tricked by Panic Disorder. They fear that that a panic attack will result in some disaster – death, insanity, or loss of control chief among them. Their own history generally reveals that panic attacks have never produced the disastrous outcomes they fear. Yet, because they attribute their survival to luck and a variety of self protective behaviors, they continue to believe that panic will lead them to a future disaster.

This is what makes Panic Disorder so powerfully chronic. Chronically anxious clients get tricked by their own efforts to avoid, distract from, and protect against the perceived dangers. When the dangers don’t come to pass, they believe they had a narrow escape from a terrible calamity, and feel more vulnerable going forward rather than less. They become increasingly afraid of more and more improbable events. Panic Disorder could be more accurately termed “the disorder of excessive self-protection”, because that’s how it functions! Learning Objectives

By the end of the training, participants will be able to:

  1. Recognize how fear of panic can impede clients’ ability to engage in treatment and utilize strategies to facilitate their engagement.
  2. Implement clinical techniques to address clients’ thoughts, feelings, and behavior that underlie panic disorder, including shame, blame, and excessive self-protection.
  3. Teach a simple breathing technique that both decreases acute panic symptoms and serves as a metaphor for management of future anxiety.
  4. Apply simple yet effective clinical interventions in sessions to teach clients a new perspective on panic attacks and a more adaptive approach to the use of exposure therapy.
  5. Model the use of humor in responding to the fears of panic disorder.
