Mental health professionals have the global power to achieve social justice, but first we must see ourselves and our systems clearly. For those from non-White racial backgrounds (i.e., African, Arab, Asian, etc.) experiences of discrimination have been shown by research to cause deleterious mental and physical health outcomes- otherwise known as race-based stress and trauma. Unfortunately, the field of psychology’s very conception was within a system of global White supremacy- meaning a lack of ideological representation from non-White researchers, clinicians, and scholars in general. The good news is that we as ambassadors of the field have the conceptual tools to rework our healing framework to root out what Dr. Sawyer identifies as “oppressive psychology” with its opposite- “liberation psychology”. By first explaining oppressive psychology from the perspective of race-based stress and trauma, we can then solidify our understanding of oppression across all areas of life (i.e., gender, self-criticism, classism, individualistic scarcity, etc.). After unpacking oppressive psychology as it presents in treatment and research settings, Dr. Sawyer will outline specific ways mental health professionals can practice liberation psychology with their patients, research questions, scholarly roles, and in their personal lives.
